Hi readers!
I posed a question to an intervenor, and now I’m asking you the same question! Exciting!
Imagine, this is the setting, a DeafBlind person is at a store, shopping no doubt! An intervenor (their eyes & ears) is guiding them around the store, relaying info, costs and expiry dates and so forth.
Everything is hunky dory…
Presently, the DeafBlind person finds something that they crave a lot, they like it so much they slip it into their coat pocket, for safe keeping. Their hands are full, so is the basket they are using for the other things.
The shopping continues, intervenor is providing info as usual.
At the checkout, the DeafBlind person unloads the basket, but possibly “forgets” about the object in their coat, it is not produced and slapped on the counter.
The intervenor does remember the object in the pocket; which leads me to the question, what does the intervenor do?
I see three potential outcomes:
- Loudly, which means using both ASL and voice, sign/say “Larry, what about the thing in your coat pocket?” This draws attention to both DeafBlind person and the cashier. The DeafBlind person would probably ”Oh yeah, right, forgot about that…” and plop the candy on the counter.
- The intervenor nudges and silently, only signs – similar to a stage whisper really, to the DeafBlind person; “…don’t forget the thing in your pocket…”. Now the DeafBlind person has the choice to remember the object or ignore the intervenor’s nudge.
- The intervenor does nothing, offers no reminders, sends no signals. The DeafBlind person has full discretion; they either remember an Aero bar is in their pocket, or they don’t.
I am almost outta gas here, so, I’m gonna post this and see what YOU have to say!
I’ll answer the DeafBlind Thief dilemma tomorrow!
