Traveling with the DeafBlind guy!

What’s the longest trip you’ve ever taken?

Hi y’all!

Now the real deal, the better answer to the prompt. The first trip did happen, make no mistake!

My longest holiday I had was 26 years ago.

I just graduated from university and wanted a nice reward.

Europe 2000 was almost 9 weeks long, unscheduled with only plan to get on a train at some point,

Here is where I went, how I got there and where I stayed:

  • London, flew in, flew out, stayed at a hostel above a pub in Camden Town
  • Paris, flew in, train out, stayed at Woodstock hostel with my sweetheart, soon to become my wife
  • Berlin, Train in and train out, forgettably stayed at a hostel somewhere.
  • Prague, Train in and out, stayed at, for the longest stop, a Deaf organization’s apartment for out-of-town Deaf people who need a place to stay… it had the BIGGEST bathtub!
  • Rumo, North Italy, drove there drove out. I took the train to Bologna, my friend’s cousin picked me up, drove me three hours to Rumo, way up on a mountain, stayed there for four days…
  • Rome, train in and out, stayed at a hostel run by nuns.
  • Paris, by this time, I had become tired of train travel, and hostels, so, I upgraded my train to no transfers, from Rome to Paris, it was about 18 hours, and bribed a canadian bishop to secure a hotel room in Paris, close to the airport. Well, he only reserved it, I paid for it once I arrived. I was there about 3 days.
  • Toronto, flew in, I was with my sweetheart, 4 days.
  • Columbus, Ohio, drove in for American Association of the DeafBlind annual conference, drove out.
  • Toronto, a few days before I flew back to vancouver, and my own bed!

You might ask: did a DeafBlind guy, me, get lost while on the mean streets of London, no, I found my way around just fine. Paris, my sweetie and I did get lost once, we were trying to find Notre Dame, but went into the Hall of Justice instead. In Prague, my Deaf Češka friend vehemently told me to not be out at night, unsafe for me. Right, so one day near the end of my time in Prague, I did get lost! I was wandering, meandering, and suddenly I realized it was late, I panicked! I trying to find a sight I had seen so I could find my way to the subway… ah there! The pub I stopped at during my first few days in the city, I knew the Subway was just around the corner! I’m pretty sure I stopped for some fine Czech beer and gnocchi before I went back to the apartment. It was a dark walk from the subway to the apartment, only a few streetlights were working! I rushed to the door, unlocked it, throwing myself inside with indecent speed, slamming and locking it as if a herd of zombies were at my heels!
