Craig’s WD #48

Today’s Word of the Day is…

Eyrie

In truth, this refers to a bird’s nest that is high on a tree.

Yet, it could also be used to describe an apartment or condo that is, well, high. Bonus points if the dwelling is shabbily maintained or furnished. The presence of birds is not connected.

I worked as a Sign Language teacher to families with Deaf children; one family lived on the 15th or 16th floor of an old apartment building in Toronto’s King Street East area. The building was okay, ignoring the graffiti, the actual unit was disorganized yet liveable. That, and the fact that there was a next of pigeons on the balcony, is a good example of an eyrie.

I do not know what happened to the family.

Thank you for reading!
