Craig’s WD #39

Today’s Word of the Day is…

Iconoclasm

This noun refers to, tersely, the attacking or rejecting cherished beliefs.

It probably started as people rejecting religious beliefs; now it can be any rejection of a respected or revered thoughts, beliefs or things.

Let’s look at some examples:

  • JK Rowling made some remarks about transsexualism (I am not going to wade into that puddle) that has many fans of Harry Potter tossing their Cauldron Cakes.
  • In Vancouver, there’s a neighborhood called Gastown; cobbled streets, historic buildings, a great place; tourist and locals love its old-time feel, vintage stores, cool restaurants, the steam clock. Yet, the founder, one old dude Gassy Jack had his coffin opened, figuratively; the bones that came out were not pretty. In terms of iconoclasm; people are rejecting Gassy Jack as a hero, I’ve heard they poured red paint on his statue, toppled it, now, it has been removed it from the pedestal.

So, you can see, really I hope you can, that iconoclasm means: first there is a belief, an entity, a thing that is well liked or loved; but something happens, and now that belief, entity or thing is no longer loved or liked.

There ya have it!

Thank you for reading!

I now need to drink my Peglyte!
