Craig’s WD# 38

Today’s word of the day is…

Hubris

Everyone has confidence, that is to say; a person can do a task they are trained at.
Doctors, UFC fighters, teachers, auto mechanics, starship pilots, martial artists, celebrity chefs, the list goes on and on…

Each person learned how to do their thing, becoming ultimately skilled.

They have confidence in their field.

Hubris is excessive self-confidence, which means they are so confident, that they consider themselves unbeatable, above others in their field, high on a pedestal.

If you’re a Star Trek fan, you might have seen Picard, a 2020 spin-off of Star Trek: The Next Generation. In the “Maps & Legends” episode, Hubris is used most colourfully; Admiral Jean-Luc Picard, retired, tries to flex his self-confidence and attempts to win the favour, meaning to command an expedition, of Starfleet by asking Admiral Kristen Clancy to provide him with the tools he needs. Clancy, having none of his hype, responses with the now-classic line: “The sheer fucking hubris!” She denied him and his ego that he rode in on!

But, Picard found other ways to overcome, and so did I.

Thanks for reading!
