Craig’s WD #20

Today‘s word of the day is…

Elide

This verb means to omit a sound or syllable while talking.

A straightforward example might be Y’all, which means “You all,” as in: Y’all wanna look more closely at…

Now, because I am DeafBlind, and use ASL, do Signers elide? Oh for sure!

Fluent signers, Deaf or DeafBlind or interpreters, will leave out letters, while fingerspelling, or full words, from their narrative.

A simple example would be: ASL: “Yesterday bnk go. Line long. Wait (x4). Finally! Blood give! Finished!”
English: “Yesterday I went to the bank, there was a very long line, I had to wait forever, finally I saw the nurse who took my blood. I left feeling exhausted…”

A few disclaimers, I am not an ASL linguistic, nor am I an English professor. So I do make mistakes.

On the other hand, I love a good linguini!

Stay tuned, I have a couple of stories to tell!
