DeafBlind issue #303

Hey folks…

As a Parent, among the plethora of responsibilities we do everyday, we need to figure out if a child is healthy and fit.

It is straightforward, right? The child coughs, has phlegm running like a tap forgotten, there are other ailments… The parent asks questions, a thermometer appears, aah… 96.2… oh yes you are sick.

And, not all sickness is visual, did you swallow sandpaper? Will you upchuck yesterday’s pot roast? So need to ask the right questions, and field the right answers.

Oh, and don’t forget the Mental Health situation; not a laughing matter.

I suspect Deaf parents have their own struggles, as I am DeafBlind, I don’t think I am qualified to blog about how they do things.

My two sons, 17 and 12, often say they are “not feeling good” or “sore throat” and I’d disbelieve it.

As a DeafBlind parent, I cannot hear my kids cough or see their snotty noses. How can you visually see a sore throat? An upset stomach?

I’ve been known to disbelieve their sickness, all because I can’t hear or see it.

This week, my youngest boy has conjunctivitis, obviously I can’t see that pinkeye. But, I believe it so.

I guess what I am trying to get out, is that I need to support my kids, not disbelieve them just because I can’t see or hear their ailments!
