A few updates…
I’m Have you moved from one place to another? Switched homes or provinces/states? I think we all have moved at least once or twice, maybe more.
Now with housing prices so very high, and rent equally high, I’m not planning to move anytime soon!
For some odd reason, I’d like to share all the places I’ve lived over the past 55 years!
- 1968 May, I popped out of my mother in Vancouver, BC, did hard time, those cribs had metal bars, at three different hospitals. After two weeks, I was released; free to grow, at Paula Place in Port Coquitlam, BC. So, I never really lived in Kerrisdale. What a way to start this journey called life!
- 1968 to 1980, Paula Place, Port Coquitlam, BC. This was my happy place, where I skinned my knees, bloodied my head, got my first bike, struggled in school, my hearing and vision losses were noticed.
- 1980 to 1989, Maple Ridge, BC. I often say: This was the longest 15 years of my life! Seemed overlong, as much happened, or maybe I remembered the 80s better than the 70s? Unknown.
- Summer of 1989, in Langley, BC. My parents had just divorced, I was living with my mum and we lived with my aunt for the summer.
- 1989 to 1996, in Port Moody, BC. My mum still lives in the same place!
- Sept 1996 to May 1997, I applied to live on campus of SFU. My first taste of independent living! Oh that was fun, and challenging.
- 1997 to 1998, back in Port Moody, but the independent person in me wanted to get back out!
- 1998 to 2001, East 11th Street, Vancouver, BC. My first real apartment. I paid $350 a month for a bachelor’s pad, including cable, utilities and a jacuzzi! Two are true, one is false! I was continuing my studies, and teaching ASL so I was pretty busy! It was during this time that I had met and fallen in love with my girlfriend. I proposed to her in my pad, well, we were on my futon to be precise!
- This woman, who lived in Toronto, was, still is, my passion! I decided to move in with her! So…
- 2001, I left my funky little apartment, returned to Mum’s house in Port Moody, then,
- 2001 to 2002, for 18 months I called Hamilton, Ontario, home. Got married in that span. We had a 9th floor apartment with a $600 rent, huge place! But… I guess I got homesick, and my wife didn’t seem to have any job… Sooo…
- September 2002, we pack it up and moved back to Port Moody, my mum was happy… but we only stayed for a whole 13 months!
- Halloween 2003, the wife & I moved into a housing co-op in Burnaby, BC. While my wife worked in Richmond. Yet job satisfaction was low at this job, so she found a better one in Abbotsford.
- November 2004, 13 months in Burnaby, we moved out to Abbotsford, with a friend. That was a challenge. Then…
- We spent Christmas 2003 in Sudbury, my wife had become homesick! Sooo, in March of 2005 to August 2008, we lived in three different places within the city of Sudbury. During those three years. I was on welfare because my wife, skilled intervenor, couldn’t find work as an intervenor. Something about needing a licence and vehicle. Plus, we finally got ourselves pregnant! Exciting times ahead! Buuut, I had had enough of Sudbury winters lasting 7 months… soooo
- 2008 to 2014 we three moved to Etobicoke, west Toronto. We got into a co-op, living first in a two bedroom apartment, then a two bedroom townhouse. My wife was hired on her first day, I became the stay-at-home dad. Several years go by until we were blessed again with our second bungle of joy!
- Co-op living can be fun, but sometimes it was too much… we wanted our yard, our fire pit, our home! Sooo… October 2014 to July 2017, we had a steal of a deal in south Scarborough! $1,200 for a 4 bedroom house! But the utilities were outrageous! And there were often signs posted saying things like “Application to Scarborough to build a bigger house” or “changing this dwelling from a duplex to a mega mansion has been approved…” we felt threatened. And sooo…
- We moved back to Port Moody, BC! July 2017 to January 2018, we crashed my mum’s house! We being: myself, my wife, my two sons, my mom in law (who moved in with us in 2015), one dog and one cat!
- January 2018 to 2021, we moved internally from my mum’s place to a two bedroom unit. Leaving the mothers in my mum’s unit!
- Then, in 2021, March, we finally moved into a bigger, three bedroom unit! And here we are now!
So, there ya go! A rundown.
Now, I’m not planning to move anywhere… but, if my ataxia gets worse than it is now, and the boys either move out or we move out and leave the house to them, we might move back to Toronto… just saying the future is undecided.
However, my future dinner is decided: wings and pizza!
