Hi readers!
I find that I write best when I am not at home, I like to be elsewhere. If I’m at home I tend to do this or that before I start writing, and usually don’t get to any actual writing! Oh and endlessly swiping TikTok vids!
So much happening at home! I frequent my alma mater, Simon Fraser University on Burnaby Mountain. I sometimes go to SFU harbour centre in downtown Vancouver, as I took some classes there. But I never do any writing at SFU Surrey, that place has no charm for me.
I have been “carded” at all three, security would approach me, what are you up to? I’d dig out of student card and they’d leave me in peace.
During Exam Week, late last year, I had an urge to finish some writing. I had started it somewhere else in the university that morning, and had a brain flash in the afternoon.
So, I found a table in the middle of a hallway in the Kinesiology building. Parking my chair, I sat at a table and immediately started working. It was a big brain flash!
I sit there, typing away, I do see students milling around where I’m plotting a regicide. A young woman sits down heavily across from me, I know the look well, she’s thumbing through her notes; probably thinking “That is not a triarticulated muscle!” I also see students glancing at notes, or with elated expressions.
Then, I look to my right, and someone is at my elbow, head right by my open iPad. She asks me something which I cannot, for reasons that I’m DeafBlind, can’t understand.
When I gesture “Deaf” – my mantra – she stands up, mutters something into a walkie-talkie, and was swallowed up by the students.
I saw the her a few minutes later, so I penned the following message, but I didn’t see her again. Let you read it now…
“Hey there! Why was it so important to interrupt my writing and then walk away without any sort of communication? Am I interrupting a study group? Is my power chair parking on someone’s kinesiology thesis? Was I farting too loud? Did you want to see my student card?”
As alum, I can go the university at any time, enjoying wifi and such.
I can even, if I wanted to, sit in on a lecture. But that is useless to me, I can’t hear or see anything, and maybe a prof would call out to me: “What you doing here…” blah blah… so I don’t do that.
To be approached by a staff member, who then was swallowed by fleeing kinesiology students, and did not tell me any reason for her interruption is pretty annoying!
Yes, I am sending this blog to the Alumni association!
I want you to have an awesome evening!
